When will the fat lady sing?

Clock got sick last night.  The dude had a relapse.  I was too weak to really deal with any of it (my last real meal was Saturday lunch), but adrenaline took over.

I slept maybe an hour or two last night.  clock was on his own.

Since he hadn't vomited in 11+ hours, I gave The Dude some water.  30 minutes later all was still fine, so I gave him some more.  In a fountainesque fashion, all the water ended up on my bed.  Sigh.  We have a doctor appointment at 10:40.

clock looks and feels how I felt Sunday morning.  My boy isn't spazzy, which is a bad sign.  I'm still weak as hell, but I'm eating Cheerios, so maybe that will help.  Maybe my stomach won't feel like I had a bad box of Krusty-Os.  I have God's own laundry to do.

This sucks.

ATTENTION SOON-TO-BE-PARENT INFIDELS:  do yourself a favor and pick up some unbleached Indian pre-fold diapers.  Sure, they're great for diapering, but they're awesome for cleaning up vomit-related incidents.  They absorb like nothing else in this house!

When my kids were young ... by lm (2.00 / 0) #1 Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 10:30:39 AM EST
... I went through billions of cloth diapers but never used anything but disposable diapers as diapers. I heartily agree with the utility of cloth diapers as barf rags and more.

And boy does it suck to be you right now. I hope you all get better soon. It's no fun to chuck and less fun to clean up after other people's having chucked.

I am surprised I didn't mention it here.  Cloth diapers are a godsend for non-diaper purposes.

Barf rags, Teething rags, Peekaboo.... by ayrlander (2.00 / 0) #12 Wed Oct 08, 2008 at 08:16:56 AM EST
Agreed, they've been good for everything except serving as a diaper for our daughter.  They're just the right size to make a tiny blanket when they're small, and she's loved chewing on it and just waving it around in general for months now.

I really should be setting up a repository of received wisdom from HuSi in preparation for April...

the tip that finally came in handy for us:  layer as many mattress pads and sheets as you can on the crib (mattress - pad - sheet - pad - sheet - pad - sheet).  when you have a middle of the night liquid incident of some kind, all you have to do is pull off the top layer and you're ready to roll.

AND - make sure you find a pediatrician that has a live person you can speak with 24 hours a day (this is GOLDEN) and has a setup where you can take your kid in today if he's sick today.  Ours is an association of 10 docs (across 2 offices) affiliated with the local children's hospital.  The midnight call clock made on Saturday night was returned by one of the hospital nurses.  A 9am call this morning got me a 10:40am appointment.  I love our pediatrician's office.

I'm fairly certain by Imperial Mince (4.00 / 2) #7 Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 11:19:41 AM EST
And I'm sure some UKian parenting infidels will correct me if I'm wrong, that we don't allow pedophiles near our children in this country. We handle all our domestic child abuse through a General Practitioner, and then they might refer you child to a paediatrician in a hospital.

That's a good un. by Breaker (2.00 / 0) #8 Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 11:20:48 AM EST
We are fortunate that we're in the catchment area of King's which is a teaching hospital.  The doctor that did our scans was also a research fellow, so I reckon we'll have pretty good access to the brightest minds.  I'll look into the 24 hours availability though.  Cheers!

Side benefit to having children: by Clipper Ship (2.00 / 0) #5 Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 11:07:07 AM EST
It's like having a living vaccine machine living with you. Eventually, you are immune to all forms of sickness and disease, unless you die, of course.

Cloth Diapers by CMcKinnon (2.00 / 0) #6 Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 11:09:48 AM EST
We used cloth diapers as "burp cloths" when burping our two boys. This turned out to be a good idea because they both had reflux and their burps were often accompanied by a couple of ounces of formula. Fortunately they grew out of that after about a year, but I agree, the diapers worked great for absorbing the mess.  Also, both of them were attached to their burp cloths for awhile, which was nicer than something else like a blanket or stuffed animal, because we could replace them with clean ones as needed, and they didn't get upset.

I used cloth diapers for burping LO. LO became attached to them and they became her blankies.

Now, a decade later... from 24 there is just one. And it's at my house.

water might have been a bad choice by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #10 Tue Oct 07, 2008 at 07:43:29 PM EST
in me, and a lot of people i know, water will not stay in an upset or empty tummy. gatorade will, though.

sucks to hear you're all sick. it's even worse when you can't sleep long enough to really get over it.
