I was waiting for THAT GAL to logon Friday night so we could, er I could ask her what she was doing the next day, and then get non-commital type plans from her. She never looged on Friday night.
Saturday night I figured that I should do what I had told myself I was going to do all week. That is move the data of the Genealogy web site, to a new server and all that jazz. Yeah.
The server I have is er was running Ubunut 6.06. I wanted to use lighttpd and sqlite with Django. There was a need for glub, I think it was. And that meant an upgrade. Those ubuntu folks are on top of their game. They support a v6.06 direct to v8.04 path. So I took it. it actually worked. More bonus, Django was in the repository for Hardy. So no compiling for me. Says the guy who runs Gentoo at home.
By this time I had started to drink again. And the way that Django does things were starting to become clear. They're not so clear now. Must not drink so much when learning, I suppose. The online documentation is good, but a little confusing. But once I got over setting up the webserver first all was okay.
I remember talking to this Windows Server Sys Admin gal from Detroit on Saturday night. She had never heard of Ubuntu. then again she claims that in all her years as a Windows admin she's never had a blue screen of death. Anyway I had remarked that as a stop gap ghetto way of keeping my laptop cool, I had placed three winecorks under it to raise it up about an inch. She was absoultely enthralled by this, this what did she call it. Brilliant!!! Yes with three exclamation points.
The corks work great, but I've had to attach a keyboard and a mouse to use the laptop now as they are not all that stable. Plus I need a 4th cork to complete the set. The first mouse I had was a the one that came with the Playstation 2 Linux kit. it's got a ball and it sucks. I then hooked up my memorex optical mouse. It's not so good either. It pauses. Even after a full charge. And the wheel works for scrolling but at the end of a scroll it bounces the window back up again. The keyboard, also from the Playstation 2, sucks as well. Add into all this the keyboard drawer pushed me away from the desk, and I can't seem to focus right, and my productivity is shot. At least the laptop doesn't shutdown from overheating..
Got an email from THAT GAL this morning. Her Grandmother passed away last night. Perhaps that was why she'd been so, aloof lately. I dunno. I have this feeling that we're on the verge of something.
Argh this keyboard setup is irratating. My fingers keep slipping off keys. I have to backspace, and that causes slippage.
I'm playing a dangerous game. The last two times I've chatted with THAT GAL about doing something they both involved her coming to my place. This is dangerous because well this place is a mess. And one day she's going to say yes, and then I'm fucked. Of course the room that is the messiest is the bedroom. Not that I have any grand illusions, but that's where the Internet is, the TV, the stereo, and it's how one gets to the bathroom. I offered to cook for her last night. Oh man I really should think before I type.
Sundays are so, meh for me. It means I have to go back to work tomorrow. It means I have to prepare the garbage. And every three weeks it means I have to get the recycling all gathered up and taken to the center. The center is not so far away but it's always busy on Sundays.
I was up yesterday at 8, and today at 8. Both times I went back to bed after looking outside and going to the bathroom. I don't know why I do this. It really makes for short weekends.
My car is paid off. That's 226 bucks a month I can put to other uses. The smart thing to do is to pay off the credit cards, as putting the 226 into the ING only makes me 3% APY. With the Stimulus rebate coming soon, paying off the debt seems more within reach. I don't have the exact figures in front of me right now but roughly by this time next year all the credit cards should be paid off. That's before the stimulus and before the car payment is factored in. then the only debt I'll have is the student loan. of course without dumping money to the cards and the car, that loan too shall be gone before it's 10 year cycle. A new job would speed all that up.
Speaking of a new job. I go the rejection letter from the place I had interviewed two weeks ago. My blah blah blah was blah blah but blah blah blah. THAT GAL suggested that I should have researched them more, and asked them more questions.
I'm no closer to making that call than I was last week. And I should have, as Thursday night was meh.
I think that a shower is in order before I take the recyling out. Not that I think I'll meet anyone at the bins, but well, I'll feel more more human at least. Plus that leaves cleaning the shower for when I come back. As well as running the sweeper. I should do that now, so I can focus on the three other things on my TODO list, so I feel like I accomplished something this weekend.
It is now 21:24. I showered, took the recycling to the bins, and went for a small drive. Ended up at Glen Onoko. There were people coming off the bike trail. IT made me regret I wasted the weekend. Even if it was a little chilly to be biking. I came back home, logged into the webserver to do the weekly updates and the daily chkrootkit and lo and behold my web server was rooted. Suckit. Some time between yesterday at 1ish and today at 5ish. Fuck. Made sure I had a backup of the important data and shut the server down. I know what I'll be doing Friday. I wonder what it was. I upgraded to Hardy and I also updated a lot to get Django running. or those two could be coincindences.
Anyway. the optical mouse also pauses in Windows so it doesn't appear to be OS related but probably battery related.
Time to post this.
