Boom boom!

Diary, cos it's been a while.

Me

Haven't written a diary in so long because too many people I knew were reading them, which was a bit weird when people would just start talking about bits from them in the pub. I've left it long enough to have lost my readership now - but let's see if I can actually get up off my arse and write.

I'm going away loads at the moment which is nice, parties hither and thither in different cities, including an FA Cup all dayer and barbecue on Saturday. Summer's here yay!

Books

Read Russell Brand's Booky Wook in a day on Saturday. Very funny, unputdownable, touching, and has a great take on the joy of performing and lust for fame.

Also reading "Riddley Walker" by Russell Hoban, a dark and depressing first-hand account of life in east Kent 2000 years after a nuclear war. It's written in a future-primitive language which makes it slow going, but this is a fantastic book, full of mystery and a horrible yearning for past, better times. Will Self cites it as a direct inspiration for The Book of Dave, and the similarities are very strong.

"Hurrah for the Blackshirts! Fascists and Fascism in Britain Between the Wars" by Martin Hugh is as in-depth and serious as you'd expect, but very readable. He takes a broad view, looking at fascim's nineteenth century, occultish roots, and why people were attracted to it, rather than dryly listing names and dates. It's entertyaining as well: a surprising amount of early fascists were female to male transvestites, and Hugh doesn't shy away from exploring why. Best history book I've read in ages.

Games

Wii Fit is ace! I am of course a fat bastard, but was pleased and surprised that after a few tests the game could tell I'd been going to the gym regularly and informed me I was actually pretty fit. The amount of mini games and how fun they are is a hidden surprise considering they're not featured on the advert.

The only problem is a lack of two player option - not with two balance boards, just with you swapping over - as it is you have to log out of your user and the other player has to log back in, which is a pain. Otherwise it would be even better than Wii Sports.

Football

I don't think I can handle the play-offs, it's just too stressful. I'll probably have the radio on for the Carlisle-Leeds first leg tonight (if it's on the radio that is), but I'm going to have to drop out later on. Squeeky bum time indeed (or "smelly bum time" as a Sky Sports News presenter so memorably put it a couple of weeks ago).

David Peace was good on the South Bank Show yesterday talking about his book "The Damned United". I love the way commentators were calling the Leeds United of the 70s "a boil on the face of the game." Made me swell with pride.

You're about the fifth person to recommend that book. I do suspect that Kent would have been slagged into glass however, and be completely unihabitable for millenia. (Ref Level 7)

Wish listed!

I think even if you don't like Riddley Walker you'll admire its style and daring.

As a Cold War geek I was a bit annoyed that Russel Hoban though only Canterbury would be nuked in the whole of east Kent. I very much doubt it.

I can't vote in that poll. Any kind of prediction might be a jinx....

More seriously, Southend held us and got one of ours sent off, but we have home advantage. So they get away goals advantage.

So... err... I darkly suspect Southend will go through.

I also suspect that Carlisle's bad run of form will continue, so you should have a good run at it.

0-0 is OK away from home by nebbish (4.00 / 1) #6 Mon May 12, 2008 at 08:26:16 AM EST
I don't want to jinx things either, but I think it'll be a Doncaster-Leeds final. Couldn't predict any further than that though, too close to call.

Awful though, isn't it? Why do we put ourselves through this?

Oh, c'mon. It's great. by yicky yacky (4.00 / 1) #7 Mon May 12, 2008 at 09:23:45 AM EST

Much better than not being involved, wouldn't you say? I'd like both Donny and Leeds to go up, though, which clearly can't happen.

Yesterday was a real rollercoaster. Yak scored, then West Ham, so everything was looking sweet. Then both Villa and Newcastle equalised, and I started to get that Englandescent sinking feeling. Then Villa went one-up and I resigned myself to "Bloody" Michael Owen killing us off. It all flipped the other way, though. Lescott scored and Ashton equalised at Upton Park. Blighters dispatched. Superb.

Easy for you to say today... You're in the [crap] Cup next year!

And if someone gets some bionic joints for Cahill then you're in with a decent chance of winning it.

Although there seem to be ongoing stirrings about Moyes' contract situation?

[ Parent ]

Yeah by yicky yacky (2.00 / 0) #10 Mon May 12, 2008 at 09:37:34 AM EST

I freely concede that, had things gone the other way, I might be slightly less chipper.

Moyes' contract is supposedly being renegotiated. I'm not too worried, as he seems quite calm about it. It's not like there are many better jobs on offer (although Chelsea is an extreme outside bet, but I imagine he'd be about tenth in the queue) and he's done really well. The word on the street is that it's more to do with how much he'll have to spend rather than his own wages, as I can't see there being a problem with the latter. I've also heard a vague rumour that the credit crunch means they're reinvestigating stadium sites within the city, but don't put too much stock in it.

0-0 isn't too bad for Donny. There's the away goals risk (I think I'd like to see the away goals rule overturned, actually) but, if you can't beat them at home ... etc.

Away goals is interesting... by Metatone (4.00 / 1) #12 Mon May 12, 2008 at 09:42:51 AM EST
I prefer neutral ground knockout games overall, because it seems to me that generically "home advantage" isn't what it used to be. As such the rationale for "away goals" sort of falls away.

However, them's the rules and as you say, if you can't win at home you don't deserve to go through. Now to work on scabbing a ticket...

[ Parent ]

Not just saying this because it'd help Leeds by nebbish (2.00 / 0) #15 Mon May 12, 2008 at 10:13:07 AM EST
But I've wondered whether goal difference could come into it more when it comes to deciding who goes up. It's certainly the measure of a team. Might stop boring Chelsea-type tactics as well.

the away goals rule isn't in force for the Football League play-offs, so you're sitting a bit prettier if true. We won't mention nebbish ...

That was the worst radio programme I've ever listened to :)

We might be able to pull it back if we play much, much better, we were really shit.

Seemed the team were intimidated by their own supporters, which would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

We didn't deserve that goal by nebbish (4.00 / 1) #28 Tue May 13, 2008 at 08:30:13 AM EST
The main problem is just how badly we played. Hopefully we can sort that out.

Everton played as if they were in quicksand at Fiorentina, but then battered them in the return leg at Goodison. Given that we then went out on penalties and played the second leg at home, I'm not sure how helpful this post is supposed to be, but you get my point. It's still possible.

Results were trickling through while I listened to the Chelsea/Man U business on Radio 5 (though god knows why, I couldn't give a shit).

I had total and utter confidence in Everton and didn't doubt it for a minute - probably because I didn't hear that Newcastle had equalised until Lescott scored later on. I hate listening to football on the radio, I can never tell what's going on!

the BBC's "Score" show, but listening rather than watching as I was doing other things. It's not really any better than Radio 5, but is more neutral as they're not covering any one match specifically, and at least they don't keep cutting away to cover the horse racing, or the Glasgow-Women's Frisbee-billiards.

Read Riddley Walker ages ago, but couldn't really get into it. I think I thought the language was well done though.

I liked the book in theory but in practice, not so much. I mean, I like the idea and the execution, but the language was such a struggle that it, unless it was a school assignment, I doubt I'd take it up again.

After reading The Book of Dave and Alan Moore's Voice of the Fire I'm used to that sort of writing, it slows the pace down a lot which can be a good thing. You can only really read about a chapter at a time.

Cos I'm only about a quarter of the way through, but I love it so far. However I have tried another one of his novels and hated it. According to my flatmate though they're all really different.

I really liked the future-primitive writing in The Book of Dave, it's the way it slows the pace down and makes it otherworldly.
